I met one of the owners of Bookmark It Bookstore at the Florida Authors and Publishers Annual Conference in August 2015. The conference was held in Orlando and one of our speakers was this adorable indie bookshop, owned by Heather Grove and Kim Britt, is located at 3201 Corrine Drive, Suite 109, Orlando, FL.
This community driven store is known for carrying local Florida authors. Spending as many months in the Florida Keys as I do, I hoped I counted as a Florida author. I did not hear back.
Until . . . Instagram!!!! Yeah! Success! My children continually insist social media is a must in marketing DLIMH and the DLIMH products. It takes a great deal of time and I often don’t know what I’m doing. After 135 Instagram posts, and enlisting Mara Millich to help on Instagram designs, Bookmark It contacted me because they were having requests for Dinosaurs Living in My Hair. They had seen my Instagram posts and were following me. I immediately mailed off five books to them. After only two weeks, they are asking for more copies.
Bookmark It is inside the East End Market in Orlando’s Audubon Park neighborhood. One side of the bookstore carries vegan cookbooks, juicing, and craft coffees. Owner, Kim Britt, explains this compliments the vendors at East End Market, the funky collection of independent shops which opened in 2013.
The other side of the store is dedicated to authors connected to Florida. “We have a tremendous writing community (in Florida),” Britt said. With the shop focused on local talent it gives authors a chance to sell their books and have a chance at finding an audience. Many of the books available here can not be found at big bookstores like Barnes & Noble.
Bookmark It sells at community events around Central Florida and has an active author participation for store gatherings. For more information, visit: BookmarkItOrlando.com. Hours of operation are 10 am – 7 pm Tuesday – Saturday; 11 am – 6 p.m. Sunday.
