DO IT YOURSELF: DINOBASKET!

Hello DLIMH followers! Meet Julian, happy winner of our fun-loaded "dinobasket" offered to participants in Schlow Centre Region Library Children's Summer Reading Program in State College, Pennsylvania. Kids earn tickets for prizes by reading books and dropping the tickets into boxes set out next to each prize, displayed on the book cases all summer as incentives. Our young winner's curly hair appears to have serious dino potential which might be what led him to our box (aside from all the cool dino stuff)! DLIMH illustrator Anni Matsick is guesting today, here to tell everyone about our fun-filled prize awarded recently at her community library and how you can make a "dinobasket" of your own!

The program for young readers covers four counties in central Pennsylvania, offering three months of fun beginning in June each year, including reading clubs, story times, crafts, and performers. Lots of prizes are donated by local merchants and supporters. Schlow is my local library so I wanted them to include a copy of our book and all the trimmings.

So, first I had to put it all together! It was a trick to have the book stand upright, using my stash of foam core scraps and a glue gun. Here's a peek at my hidden engineering:

The back looked good, too, with a stegosaurus nestled near the tee-shirt Jayne sent declaring "Dinosaurs Live in My Hair!" . . . just the right size for Julian!

Once the basket was loaded, I learned a new skill using my hair dryer: shrink wrapping!

You can have fun assembling your own version of a dinobasket for your lucky little one. I found the basket, straw, and stegosaurus at a Dollar Tree. The shrink wrap bags can be found at Michaels Craft stores and Walmart. In addition to the book and tee-shirt, Jayne contributed more dino-theme items: dinosaur egg crayons, tattoos, pencils, and balloons. Add a comb or brush like Sabrina's in the book. For girls, you can find beautiful designer dino barrettes in Jayne's online store. Let us know what YOU gather, and send a photo to share! I hope you enjoyed reading about mine.  ~~  Anni
